I should clarify that dps can test their single target dps on the heroic training dummies in any alliance capital city.

Yes, it's all that's required for heroics. I'm talking about getting ready for raiding.

This post is not about raid gear. Please restrict your comments to everything else.

Gearing up can be hard, since most ppl will leave the party after a few wipe. Its not anyone's fault(most of the time.......well maybe sometime) but the point is we learn from our mistakes. Well i pugged my way to be ready for 10 man contents, I realize it could be a lot easier to do it with guildies. You will always have a solid group, with much better communitcation and more understanding. So if you want to get to new contents faster, start running heroics with ur guildies, even u dont need anything from the instance u are helping ur guild out, and that much closer to reach the raid u always want to do.

We have some formalities out of the way. Executive Officers are in position, the officer pool has been culled. Joining requirements are in place, as well as alt restrictions. Core members are either finishing their leveling or are pugging heroics. On Fridays, interested members have been joining forces to clear, first old world (just a few), and then BC raids (just started). This helps us get to know each other and irons out any technical issues before we get to the real raids.
Here is where we are going.
The guild will effectively be divided into casual players and raiders. The casual players will not be first in line for raiding because they are not willing to set aside enough RL hours to get geared in time (I don't blame them). However, those casuals who are eventually geared well enough will be allowed to substitute when needed.
If you so desire to be a raider one day, then this is what you need to do:
1. Level to 80
2. Gear up for Heroics
a. tanks; reach def cap of 540 (689 defense rating) and 20k hp. Unless you are experienced and really know what you are doing, the 2 requirements for tanks needs to be reached on gear alone. Your gear will not be good enough if you are meeting these requirements through the use of enchants, gems, etc.
b. dps; achieve single target dps of 1.2k on heroic level bosses. This can be met a number of ways and depends on class. Check out some forums on Projectlore.com or Wowhead.com. Also, hit up a fellow member who knows your class.
c. healers; this is very class dependent and is basically determined by your ability to keep a tank/group alive. If you can't heal your tank through that boss fight and he's meeting his requirements, then you probably are not ready. There are a plethora of exceptions to this, because there is are no real numbers you can reach for that will tell you that you're gear ready.
3. Level 2 main professions: if you are going to be a raider you need every little bit of extra dps, threat, healage, survivability, w/e. Professions are an awesome, easy way to get an extra 5-10% of any of those, or all of them. There are many good combinations of professions for specific raid roles. Too many to list here.
4. Item buffs: these are scrolls, flasks, food buffs, etc. For specific roles in a raid, there are "best in slot" buffs. Figure out which ones you need and how to get them.
5. Gear up for raids: specifics to come in a later post. I've said a lot already.
And please, if I have forgotten any general preparation that needs to be made, feel free to post it below. Please do not get class/spec specific.
